Unfortunately, the sqirrels get bored with it and go back to the bird seed. They were hysterical to watch, but don 't buy this if your trying to lure sqirrels AWAY from your birdfeeder.

It took a day for the goldfinches to realize what it was.
I did shake the feeders a little so that some of the seed would stick out and placed them next to the sock feeders. After 24 hours the finches started to use it. It will hold about 20 finches at a time ( I have the large size) and they look beautiful next to the black metal.
It isn't difficult to see how much food is left if you look straight through the sides. You can also tell by the position of the birds on the tube.

Hummingbird Feeder Review

(More customer reviews)This hummingbird feeder is a prety design, with a yellow hue to the glass, and a colorful metal hummingbird attached to the wire that supports it. The glass container is flat sided, but does hold 8 oz of nectar - however, it cannot be removed for cleaning - you have to work with the wire support still attached. Also, the feeder does hang straight down - as shown - making it empty completely in the slightest wind, or if a larger bird lands on it (and the bigger birds ARE determined to try!) So, tho pretty, this feeder is not very functional, and I do NOT recommend it.

(More customer reviews)I had a feeder with four socks that attracted vast flocks of finches, right outside my window, and I loved it. What I didn't love was the huge piles of seed that spilled out every day. Far more seed was wasted than eaten.
This feeder can't hold as many finches as four long socks, obviously, but I've counted 8 or 9 at a time clustered around it. And spillage can't be more than about one twentieth of the old feeder. This thing is sturdy, and the lid comes off easily for refilling.
Highly recommended.

C&S 608 Squirrelog Refill Pack, 2-Pack Review

(More customer reviews)I have been using these for many years. They are ground up whole corn. When squirrels eat off of corn cobs they eat just the tiny germ and then discard the rest of the kernel creating a big mess.
I live deep in woods virtually surrounded by State Park/Lake/Wildlife Habitat, Towns Habit, County Habits and Audubon Lands. Off my house is a tree level 30 ft X 30 ft deck with many METAL bird feeders on two sides hanging out into the woods. There is no way to totally protect them from the squirrels, who eat up plastic and wood, but using long, nearly horizontal hangers for feeders and safflower seeds for those that hang close to rails helps to discourage squirrel chewing. Squirrels aren't supposed to like Safflower but I have one pregnant female who eats safflower. ;(
Anyway I keep two logs out at all times for the many, many wild (obese) squirrel "pets" that live here. I can usually go through "only" about 6 logs a week (and some wildlife feed scattered on deck) as long as I bring one of the logs in every night that the opossums steal if left out.
I haven't observed any other birds showing much interest in the logs other than the Crows. They love them. We have several families of Crows who visit daily to eat the logs,Safflower seeds, and woodpecker's special suet (squirrels favor that one too).
BTW... On the few occasions we run out of Squirrelogs and are not successful hitting the few stores around that carry them but always seem to be out we have had to use corn cobs. Between the crows and squirrels we have to replace the cobs every hour or so. AND THE MESS!!!!!
This price from this seller is the best I have found even with shipping. And with one exception the packages from our local sources always have bugs in them ... the one that doesn't has the initials is PS.
You wont go wrong getting this product. I used to use the little wood seat to hold the logs. After the novelty wears off a strategically placed screw holder that comes with some of the packaged logs works fine and gives appropriate viewing pleasure. One local seller sells packages that icludes a holder screw in each package; others sell packages without the screw holders. The prices are pretty close. I have a huge collection of the screw holders and haven't yet found another use for them.

It may be that the squirrels in Cary, NC are extra tall or that the Arrow Feeder is short (on the corn end) by about 3 inches because they don't really need to work at getting their treat.

Martin houses are heavy (even heavier with birds and nests in them) and probably require the strength of steel rather than wood or PVC. Installation requires digging a 12 " hole, 30" to 36" deep, a bag of cement and some gravel. Of course, this means you must have the tools necessary for digging and mixing the cement (Post hole digger, mixing pan, hoe, and a shovel) and the permission of the property owner.

They fit together losely, wobble, and sway in the wind. And the nest box MOVES with the poles. I wonder if any chickadees will nest in it :(

Best 1 32 oz. Hummingbird Feeder (Bulk) Review

(More customer reviews)My husband bought me 2 of these feeders for my birthday. They worked ok. the Hummingbirds used them, but not as much as my others. Mine faded the first season and the words on the outside washed of first thing, which could be a good thing.I was looking through a hummingbird web site and found that these feeders are death traps for the little guys and they had a picture of one of its victims. They said if you modify them, they are useable. To modify, First, from the bottom side of the feeder lid, re-drill each port hole outward at a 45 degree angle. Next, cut or grind the nipple from the underside. If you don't have a grinder, simply used a razor blade to cut down through the nipple at a 45 degree angle. To me it's not worth the risk to my little friends and I shouldn't have to mess around with modifying something before I use it.

Unfortunately, a finch also thought it made a nice perch and immediately broke the plastic 'hooks' that hold it in place. I would imagine this would not be an isolated experience and wish the feeder had been better manufactured, especially for the price. I will buy a different type of feeder in the future.

It works as advertised and was frequently covered with small birds taking advantage of the many feeding stations. It has a unique system that makes it very easy to fill. I have had a problem with pigeons perching on the edge of the lower tray in order to get at the chipped sunflower birdseed that I use and because of this pigeon problem I have had to replace this feeder with one that has a screen around the feeding tube to keep squirrels and larger birds away from the bird seed. I replaced this feeder with a $35 one from Lowes that has a screen around the feeding tube and a tray in the bottom to catch the dropped seed.

Spiral Whole Peanut Feeder - Yellow 17 inch Review

(More customer reviews)Washed it, put whole peanuts in it and hung it in my yard, which is a very successful habitat for both small and large birds. Took about 4-5 days for blue scrub jays and tit mice to get interested in the feeder. Sort of works painfully. The jays, who are problem solvers have now given up on the feeder.
Here are the reasons:
The spiral ladder on the feeder is too narrow and uncomfortable for their feet to hang onto. A platform landing became absolutely essential for the jays. A base screwed under it, made it swing and turn madly interfering with getting to the peanuts. The holes of the feeder are too small for whole peanuts and too big for unshelled nuts which fall out. The jays will work on the feeder briefly only if there isn't any food around provided halved peanuts in shells are in it.
Titmice and wrens do go up and down the spiral but can only get at peanuts placed facing holes in halved shells. Once a nut is removed from it's shell, the shell blocks the hole. The flickers wouldn't go near it.
Feeder required constant monitoring. Difficult to clean. Had to buy base for it. Don't know why it was painted a bright yellow. Tired of it. Birds loving 'the spiral stairway' is rubbish. But will give the design another shot. Have ordered one with much smaller holes. Will place mashed peanuts in it for the wrens and smaller birds. We'll see if that works.
