Aspects 381 Hummzinger Fancy Hummingbird Feeder - Rose Review

(More customer reviews)Remember that last hummingbird feeder you owned that dripped constantly, attracted bumblebees and ants and required a little bottle brush to clean? You probably gave up in sheer frustration after a few months. Well those days are long gone - the first time you fill up your Hummzinger, you will be in love with hummingbird-watching all over again.
I've owned mine for four years. I love it because it's never attracted any insects, never dripped, and cleans up easily with a sponge. The local hummers love it because they can perch and rest while they feed. I hung it from a cup hook on the eaves near the back patio door and watch them year round. It stays steady and dripless even in high winds.
Whoever designed this thing has not only a lot of common sense but a good eye for aestetics. The plainer version (mine) looks like a flying saucer, which suits me, but for Mother's Day I got my mom this fancier one, which looks as if it could stack up against the pricier glass art feeders. The Hummzinger, however, wouldn't shatter if it fell on the patio.
A few tips if you are planning on purchasing this:
1. Don't bother with the replaceable insect guards that you can buy to insert into the feeding holes. They don't do anything as far as I'm able to tell, but they are a pain and an expense.
2. Pass on the commercial nectar mixes and make your own by mixing one part sugar to four parts water (this recipe is permanently printed inside the feeder's top!). No dyes. No need to boil. I realize that boiling the mixture is traditional advice, but it's based on the mistaken notion that by sterilizing it you will keep bacteria and molds from spoiling it in the feeder. Turns out that the first time a hummingbird dips his beak into the mix, he introduces all that stuff instantly anyway. If, like me, you would be discouraged from changing it as often as you should because boiling and cooling it becomes a chore, this will free you up to be a better caretaker of your little friends. Oh, and they don't need humans to add vitamin supplementation to their nectar because they get all that from the insects they eat.
3. Hang it where you can observe it easily from your home. Enjoy!

All Weather Feeder 6 Qt. Clear Review

(More customer reviews)I have used this feeder for almost five years and I love it! I have tried a lot of feeders over the years and this one is the best. It is the only feeder that I don't have to worry about refilling or cleaning out every day or two and I can just enjoy watching the birds. Other feeders allow the seed to get wet and moldy, but all the seed stays dry in this feeder. It's large capacity means you only need to refill it about once a month. The design only allows the birds to take one seed at a time from a small crack, so seed isn't wasted like it can be with a platform type feeder. All sorts of birds feed from it- cardinals, red-wing blackbirds, goldfinches, chickadees, woodpeckers, etc. I've never seen starlings use this feeder. I think it took just a couple days for the birds to figure out how to use this. Just sprinkle some seeds on the bottom platform and they'll get the idea soon enough. New birds will watch and learn from the others to see how to get the seed.

We have it just outside a large picture window and hang our hummingbird feeders on the top level and sunflower heart feeders on the lower rungs. Birds love to perch on the gracefully arched rungs even when not feeding. We have so many beautiful birds now at close range that a good camera is the next thing on our list. I have never seen a feeder station quite this well designed.

IT HAS EVEN DETERRED THE HOUSE SPARROWS. UNFORTUNATELY IT HAS ALSO DETERRED THE DESIRED BIRDS. THIS FEEDER HAS BEEN UP FOR A MONTH AND SO FAR I HAVE SEEN A TITMOUSE ACTUALLY INSIDE THE CAGE ON TWO OCCASIONS, AND JUST YESTERDAY SAW A DOWNY WOODPECKER FEEDING FOR THE FIRST TIME. I'VE SEEN ANOTHER TITMOUSE HANGING ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE CAGE TRYING TO FIGURE A WAY TO GET IN. AS FAR AS QUALITY GOES, IT SEEMS WELL MADE, ALTHOUGH IT'S A LITTLE TRICKY GETTING THE LID FASTENED CORRECTLY. I STILL KEEP FINDING WAYWARD PEANUTS IN MY LAUNDRY ROOM FROM MY FIRST ATTEMPT AT GETTING THE LID SECURED. IT FELT TIGHT, BUT AS I FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY, IT WASN'T COMPLETELY FASTENED. I HOPING THE BIRDS WILL FINALLY FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET INSIDE THE CAGE AND FEED.

(More customer reviews)Grackles and starlings are able to fly up and peck at the bottom, but with much reduced success. Catbirds have much better luck, flying up more fluidly and grabbing a mouthful. I don't mind the catbirds. The grackles and starlings and squirrels were hogging all the suet and that has stopped.
The higher you hang it, the harder it is for the big, greedy birds to get suet.
Chickadees, titmice, wrens and, of course, woodpeckers have no problem getting their share.

Perky-Pet 221 Hummingbird Oasis Feeder, 16-Ounce Capacity Review

(More customer reviews)My hummers had no trouble switching from the basic bottle feeders to this saucer, and I love it because it's the oh-so-easy to clean. The built in ant moat dries out rather quickly, but I basically fail to fill it anyway, and haven't had any ant problems at all. I now have 2 of these feeders, that hang from shepherds hooks, and there's no leakage problems whatsoever. Remember: change your sugar water frequently; every few days, to avoid spoilage. I highly recommend this feeder.
EDIT (04/2008): I wish this feeder came in 8oz, since I don't really need 16oz, and don't get that many hummers (unfortunately). But, I did also purchase a Hummzinger Fancy (12 oz), and surprisingly I just didn't like it. It was easy to clean, but was deeper than the PPO, which didn't appeal to me. I had put the Perky Pet on one hook on the south side of the house, and the HummZinger on the north side's hook. The HummZinger didn't get much activity, which was surprising since the hummers are used to both hooks having a feeder. After 2 weeks, I put the HummZinger away and went back to 2 PP's. Activity resumed on the north hook...
Considering both feeders are outside from April to November, and rinsed in hot water for every cleaning, they've held up well. No cracking, minimal color fading, no flowers have needed replacement to date.

Droll Yankees UYS Ultimate Yard System Review

(More customer reviews)We ordered the Droll Yankees Ultimate Yard System after comparing several feeder poles on Amazon and elsewhere. We wanted to mount it in one of our flower beds away from the house -- my husband was sick of sweeping up nyjer and sunflower seeds dropped on the patio by picky goldfinches. Overall, the system is very well-designed. The auger on the bottom of the pole is serious business, and the three legs really help stabilize the pole. The arms attach securely to the pole, and hold fairly heavy feeders without complaint. Four stars instead of five because the instructions are a bit cryptic -- wish there were more illustrations -- and because the pole still does wobble a bit. Perhaps this is inherent to any pole-based feeder system. At any rate, we're very happy with this purchase, and it seems like it will last a good long time. The birds are happy too.

Stokes Select 38069 Squirrel Proof Double Suet Feeder Review

(More customer reviews)I had a problem with squirrels eating my suet cakes. This contraption kept out the squirrels but still allowed the woodpeckers to feed. In fact it kept the woodpeckers around a little longer to view as some would climb inside the cage and others would peck at it from the bottom or side. Even the big Pileated woodpeckers could reach the food. I would leave this out at night and one night a big racoon took it down, but couldn't get at the suet. The next night, it was gone. I guess he took it to his den to use his power tools on it. Anyway, here I am to buy another. I'll bring it in each night from now on.
